Sussi Hodel (b. 1971 in Brædstrup, Denmark) is a Danish-Swiss visual artist whose practice centres on figurative painting. She lives in Unterägeri and works from her studio in Neuägeri in the canton of Zug, Switzerland.
Practice
At the core of her work is the human figure as an emotional, social and psychologically complex presence. Working primarily in oil on canvas and wood, Hodel creates pictorial spaces in which light, shadow, atmosphere and condensed narrative play a defining role. In addition to painting, her practice includes installation and video.
Training
She trained at the School of Classical Painting in Lucerne with Lisa Schneider and further developed her practice over nine years in the studio of Belgian artist André de Maertelaere. In 2023 she completed a MAS in Cultural Management at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts.
Exhibitions and collections
Her work has been exhibited in Switzerland and internationally, including at MoCA – Museum of Contemporary Art Beijing, SCOPE Basel, and at exhibitions and art fairs in London, Miami, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Innsbruck. Her works are held, among others, in the art collection of the Municipality of Baar and by Stiftung Chlösterli in Unterägeri.

In the exhibition WoMankind (26.09.–30.10.2026) Sussi Hodel shows work alongside Tamara Riedel on the body, visibility and the freedom to decide how much of ourselves becomes visible.
In her paper-bag paintings the face withdraws from immediate identification. The paper bag becomes a temporary space of retreat, while posture, closeness, distance and touch carry the emotional narrative. In the new series Zeitlose Sinnlichkeit (Timeless Sensuality) that movement reverses: mature women deliberately choose visibility – self-assured, sensual and present.
